Do Algae Resistant Shingles Work ?

We are often asked by our customers here in Tampa, if Algae Resistant Shingles are effective, in keeping a roof clean.

Asphalt Shingles are made Algae Resistant by a patented process developed by the 3M Company.

Copper granules are embedded in the shingles. When water from Dew contacts the Copper, it leaches down the roof, slowly killing algae and bacteriological growth, and prevents roof cleaning.

This is what is claimed anyway.

Our experience is this, Algae Resistant Shingles do get dirty (we clean them here in Tampa all the time). However, they do seem to prevent the growth of Algae a few years longer then non algae resistant shingles.

Eventually, the heat and humidity here in the Tampa Florida area makes roof cleaning necessary, even for algae resistant roofing shingles.

If you have these algae resistant shingles on your roof, we may be able to assist you in getting your roof cleaned under warranty, for FREE !

Black Stains On Roof

Roof Cleaning

It’s inevitable, your roof is going to eventually get dirty and start developing black streaks on your roofs. Your roof might not show these signs for a long time but eventually it’s something you are going to have to deal with. Most people don’t really notice the roof stains on buildings until it happens to our own house. Just look at all the houses you pass by each day and you’ll most definitely notice black stains on some of the roofs. This isn’t good and it needs to be taken care of right away.

Roof cleaning is extremely important as it can damage the roof if not taken care of immediately. It will also really increase the curb appeal of your house, which is always a good thing. This is especially true if you’re trying to sell your home. It’s one of the first things someone will notice when driving up to your house to get a look at it.

One thing about developing roof stains on your home is that the affected area won’t be even across the roof but it will instead appear in patches. Some spots will be relatively clean while others have very noticeable spots or streaks on them. This is because certain parts of a roof won’t get as much sun as other parts. It could be because of trees that cast shadows onto the roof or just the fact that the roof faces north which won’t get as much sun as the side facing the south. This will lead to the moisture staying in the shady areas of a roof longer than spots that get more sun.

Moss is one of the more common growths you will find growing on your roof shingles. Also, black algae are another common growth on roofs that get a lot of moisture on them. These things need to be taken care of immediately because the damage they can do is surprising. They can eat right through your shingles and will spread around your roof doing even more harm.  Don’t delay get yourroof cleaned today.

Is Your Roof Being Ruined ?

Some people here in the Tampa Florida area, consider a dirty shingle roof to be just a cosmetic problem. Oh sure, they do realize there is a plant growing on their roof. And some of them know that plant can spread to their driveway, house, and even to the neighbors house. But they are under the mistaken impression that a filthy dirty roof is nothing more then a reason for their property managers or homeowners associations to “pick on them”.

This video clearly shows the damage that can be caused to a shingle roof if it is not cleaned.

Preparing to Get Your Roof Cleaned

OK, you have hired a company to come and clean your roof (we hope it is us), now what ? It is May 12th 2012, and we have not had any rain here in Tampa Florida for a long time. This means, the plants are all very dry, and also very thirsty. Unlike us Humans, who will eat and drink even if we are not hungry and thirsty, a plant only takes from the earth what it needs to survive. The chemicals we use to clean and treeat your roof are poisons to plants. Remember, that is a plant growing up there, and we must remove and kill it, or it will grow right back. The plants will drink this chemical and die, if they are thirsty, because unlike us Humans, they have no sense of taste or smell. So, we ask you to water the plants the night before we come to clean your roof, so this does not happen. Our groundspeople will promptly water the chemicals off your plants as we are working, to protect them. Dogs and Cats are not a problem, because they can smell, and want no part of the solution we use to clean your roof with. Dogs will bark at us (though we love all animals), because we are people they have never seen, spraying some stuff they have never smelled before, in a place (your roof) where they have never seen people before. But, just for safety, all animals should be put inside the day we come out. We could never live with ourselves if the wind carried the roof cleaning solution into an animals eyes. If you have no gutters, BBQ’s, Plants in Pots, etc, etc, should be moved either out into the yard, or put away from any possibility of solution dripping on them. Cars should be out of the driveway, and people must not come and go as long as we are there. We have cleaning roofs down to a science, and will not be at your home all day long. Usually, we only need a few hours, and the result will be a safely cleaned roof, that will stay that way for many years.

Roof Cleaning Costs Tampa, Florida

How much does a roof cleaning cost in the Tampa Florida area ? That’s a great question to ask as every roof, shingle, tile, or metal, is different. There will be many variables when estimating a cost, including roof size and type, labor and chemical usage costs, but in this Blog post we will try to cover the basics. Why are you getting your roof cleaned ? Has your Tampa Homeowner Association recently sent you a roof cleaning letter ? Maybe you’re you tired of having the dirtiest roof in the neighborhood ? Did you notice black roof stains on Northern and Western sides of your house ? A good first impression on a home can add as much as 10 to 20 percent to the value of the home, according to some Tampa Realtors we clean roofs for! On average it will cost anywhere from $3,400 to $6,000 to hire a Tampa Roofing Contractor to replace a shingle roof on a 2,000 sq foot home. We all know times are tough here in Tampa, and that sort of money may be hard to come up with for most families. If money is tight, but you are looking to increase the life of your shingle roof a few more years, then cleaning your roof will be thousands of dollars less than replacing it, saving you the unnecessary expense. Sounds like Safe Roof Cleaning is right choice but…. Roofs get a lot of moisture on them in the early morning hours. Because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the eastern part of the roof is dried of it’s moisture by the sun in the first part of the day. The western side of the roof does not have sun reach it until the afternoon. That creates a damp, shady environment where black roof mold, green mildew, and algae can grow. If you wondering how much a roof cleaning in Tampa Florida costs, it could be as low as $199.00 or even $40,000. It all depends on the square footage, the degree of difficulty, and if your roof has gutters or not. And, tile roofs always cost more then shingle roofs, because they take much more time and chemicals, and they are much more difficult to clean safely. Apple at 813-655-8777, is Tampa Florida’s #1 Roof Cleaning Company. If you are looking to get a 15,000 sq ft roof cleaned in Avila, it most likely be more expensive if you are getting a 2,000 sq ft roof cleaned in Tampa Palms. The bigger the roof is, the more expensive it will be to clean it, as it will be more labor intensive and chemical consuming for our RCIA Certified Roof Cleaners. If you would like an estimate, we would more than happy to give you a roof cleaning cost by phone. Usually, there is no need to actually come out to see your shingle or tile roof. Cleaning Your Own Roof?

Here is a funny video about a guy falling off of a roof. However, a fall from a roof can be fatal, and that’s not funny. As we get older, our ability to recover from an accident gets less and less. Sure, there are all sorts of roof cleaning concoctions that can be bought here in Tampa, that promise to clean your roof if applied correctly. But think about this for a minute ? If these products really worked as claimed, why would there be any need for roof cleaners in Tampa ? Plus, many of these products claim to clean your roof over time. We think these products depend on you losing your receipt over time, so you can return them, LOL

We have heard horror stories from many of our Tampa Roof Cleaning Customers who spent good money for these Internet Roof Cleaning Chemicals who attempted to get a refund. These customers were told they “did not apply the product correctly” and given such a run around, they finally accepted the fact they had been ripped off. Many of these customers also told us they had no idea that roof cleaning was so reasonably priced either. One customer with a tile roof actually spent over 300.00 on some roof cleaning chemical he bought off the Internet that failed to deliver the results promised. He missed 2 days of work, because he had to apply a second application.

We cleaned and treated his tile roof in Tampa Palms for 500.00. He was shocked, and said he felt like a fool trying to clean his own roof. He admitted he slipped on his tile roof a few times, but thankfully, did not fall to his death.

Our advice is do not try and clean your own roof. Call us at 813-655-8777, and let’s make a deal to get your roof cleaned the right way.

Can a Tile Roof Help Fix Air Pollution?

I teach my trade at the Roof Cleaning Institute, and have to be aware of all new aspects of cleaning roofs. This is a amazing new invention that caught my eyes recently. I will let the article speak for itself, and can only address the cleaning aspects that will be involved for us roof cleaners here in Tampa, and everywhere else these roofing tiles will be used at.

These new tile roofs will have Titanium Oxide coatings on them and IMHO will not be able to have any pressure washing used on them. Interestingly enough, Titanium is a chemically resistant metal, and the chemicals we currently use to clean tile roofs with should have no effect on them.

I moved to the Tampa Florida area back in 1971, and remember when the air used to be much cleaner. Air Pollution is a serious problem, and this is a great way to help combat the problem. Titanium Dioxide is also a very potent way to prevent Roof Algae from growing on tile or shingle roofs as well.

The Titanium Coated Tile Roofs will stay clean longer, as well as help clean the air we all breathe here in Tampa. What a great idea! I hope you enjoy the article.

It is great news for anyone who lives in a Tampa Florida area deed restricted community. It will greatly prevent that dreaded Homeowners Association Roof Cleaning Letter!

Los Angeles and London (CNN) — Can the roof of your house help you breathe easier by reducing the amount of harmful pollutants from urban air?

“Yes,” claims John Renowden, vice president of technology at Boral Roofing, a U.S. company that has introduced a line of roof tiles that they say have pollution-busting properties.

Based near Los Angeles, the most ozone-polluted city in the U.S., according to 2012 rankings by the American Lung Association, the company says its “Smog-Eating Tiles” improve air quality by neutralizing smog-forming nitrogen oxides released by most vehicles (read more about smog in our fact box).

The tiles are coated with titanium dioxide, a photocalyst that can oxidize harmful air pollutants emitted in the burning of fossil fuels. When exposed to natural light, the titanium dioxide breaks down nitrogen oxides in the air and turns them into harmless calcium nitrate.
We have to move past our oil dependence but it won’t happen overnight
John Renowden, Boral Roofing

“Calcium nitrate … washes off your roof with normal precipitation and is a regular garden fertilizer,” said Renowden. He notes that the tiles typically add between $600-$1000 to the price of tiling an average roof.

He adds that over a one-year period, the tiles on a 2,000 sq/ft house can oxidize nitrogen oxides “equivalent to driving 10,000 miles a year in your car.”

Boral Roofing claims to be the first construction company in the U.S. to introduce titanium dioxide coatings to roofing products.

The technology originates in Japan and has been adopted in Europe by a number of industries. In the last few years, it has been used in the production of several products, including eco-friendly cement, architectural panels and paints.

The de-polluting properties of titanium dioxide, a compound commonly used as a white pigment in paints and plastics, were tested in a European Commission-backed project in 2005.
Smog
Nitrogen oxide is emitted as a byproduct of burning fossil fuels in vehicles and electric power plants. Smog is formed when nitrogen oxide mixes in the air with other chemicals in the presence of sunlight and heat. Smog is linked to a number of respiratory illnesses and can cause coughing and breathing difficulties.

“Tests in urban settings determined that some pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, which are a major pollutant contained in exhaust gases, could be reduced by 20-70%,” according to the European Commission’s Environmental Technologies Action Plan.

Air pollution is one of today’s biggest urban problems.

It poses a serious threat to the health of city dwellers, according to experts. Air pollution — outdoor and indoor — is estimated to cause more than two million deaths a year worldwide, according to Maria Neira, director of health and environment at the World Health Organization.

“It is definitely one of the biggest health challenges we are confronted with today,” she said. Exposure to urban air pollutants can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer as well as trigger asthma attacks, she added.

A recent study on the UK’s air quality by MIT pollution experts Steve Yim and Steven Barrett found that traffic pollution is killing more people than road accidents per year, causing 13,000 premature deaths on an annual basis.
The best way to tackle the problem is to clean up the source
Janice Nolen, American Lung Association

A brief uptick in traffic-related air pollution may also be enough to increase a person’s short-term risk of stroke, another report found in February this year.

Four in 10 Americans live in counties with dangerous levels of either ozone or particle pollution, according to the American Lung Association.

The organization’s recent State of the Air 2012 report found that California is home to many of the country’s most polluted cities, with Los Angeles continuing to top the list of ozone-polluted cities thanks to its heavy road traffic and trade ports.

Renowden says that more sustainable solutions are needed in the fight against urban air pollution.

“We have to move past our oil dependence but it won’t happen overnight,” he said.

Janice Nolen, national policy adviser at the American Lung Association, says that rather than dealing with the harmful effects of air pollution, the focus should be on tackling the problem at source.

“What we have found historically in any kind of pollution is that the best way to tackle the problem is to clean up the sources,” she said, “rather than trying cleaning it up afterwards when it’s in the air.”

“If you can keep those raw ingredients that make up ozone from coming out of the tailpipes and the smokestacks, then you don’t have to worry so much about cleaning it up later on,” adds Nolen.

Will the roof cleaning chemicals harm my plants or shrubs?

Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa 813-655-8777 will take every reasonable precaution to prevent damage to plants, shrubs and grass and trees. We will thoroughly wet down all plants, including grass, shrubs, and trees. As the cleaning of your shingle or tile roof progresses, we will saturate all plants, as required to protect them, and then rinse your plants down some more. This complete and thorough rinsing dilutes the roof cleaning chemicals enough in activity, that we don’t have much to worry about.

Some one man roof cleaners who work alone, and lack a person on the ground to protect your landscaping, apply an already diluted mixture to your roof. This weak mixture costs them less to apply, and allows them to “get away” with out having a ground person to rinse it off your plants. The cost savings to them allows them to be a little lower in price, but beware! That is a plant growing on your roof, and this plant must be killed, or it can grow right back in no time!

Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa 813-655-8777 gives you your moneys worth, by applying a cleaning mixture that is strong enough to kill the plant growing on your roof.

We will always have at least two RCIA Certified Professionals on any given job. One man works the roof, the other man works the ground. The person on the ground responsible for keeping everything wet in case of over spray etc. It is very seldom that we have any problems with plants, but it is not impossible.

We are always honest with our customers, and tell them the truth. If you can’t tolerate a yellow blade of grass, there are plenty of Pressure Washing Companies here in the Tampa Florida area who will glady ruin your roof. These types of companies use high pressure water only instead of chemicals to wash your roof with.

Yes, your plants will be safe with them, and your roof will be clean. However, if it is a shingle roof, 1/2 of it will be on the ground!
